MEMBERSHIP

We are a professional organization committed to the quality and promotion of health education, physical education, recreation and dance programs throughout the State of New York. Our members are directors of health, physical education and athletics; health and physical education teachers; recreation and dance professionals; college professors and future professionals.

Membership Options

Professionals are those engaged in the teaching of health education, physical education, recreation, dance programs, and individuals who support these programs. Professional Council of Administrators are those having responsibilities for health, and /or physical education and/or athletic programs. Undergraduate and Graduate Students are students currently enrolled full-time in a professional school studying health education, physical education, recreation, or dance programs who are not currently teaching in the K-16 system. Retirees include any person who met the criteria for professional membership and is now retired as defined by New York State Retirement System.

Professional Development

The most important aspect of an association is providing professional development that enables members to create an experience for their students that is inspiring and dynamic!

We provide professional development opportunities through zone and state level conferences and virtual seminars. We also provide technical assistance related to regulations, recommendations, and resources.

Insurance

NYS AHPERD offers an annual General Liability Insurance program that covers current members in their workplace and for job-related activities outside the workplace.

Current members have a $1,000,000 general liability insurance policy, administered by Loomis & Lapann Inc.

Advocacy

Our advocacy initiatives add a powerful voice to keep health, physical education, recreation and dance programs as part of every child's education.

The association leadership organizes advocacy initiatives with members of the Board of Regents, the Commissioner of Education, our Legislative Representatives and the Governor.

Grants

The NYS AHPERD Foundation and some Zones offer annual grant opportunities. These grants are only available to NYS AHPERD members.

The Foundation offers eleven $1,000 grants. The application is available in January and due in September. The Zones that offer grants are Capital, CNZ, CWZ, Nassau, Southeastern, Suffolk and Western.

CTLE's

Teachers need 100 CTLE hours every five years to maintain their teaching certifications. NYS AHPERD is certified by the State Education Department to provide these hours.

Processing of CTLE hours is free for members, non-members pay $20. This applies to any professional development we offer including through our zones and sections.

Leadership

Volunteer, active membership in NYS AHPERD provides an opportunity to nurture and strengthen your leadership skills and give back to your profession.

Volunteering at the zone or state level opens doors for gained knowledge, establishing association policy, networking and sharing best practice

Member

$110 Annually*
  • Those engaged in the teaching of health education, physical education, recreation, dance programs, and individuals who support these programs.

Retired Council of Administrators Member

$65 Annually*
  • Retiree Members having served as a director, chairperson, or coordinator having responsibilities for health, and /or physical education and/or athletic programs.

Professional Council of Administrators Member

$135 Annually*
  • Professionals serving as a director, chairperson, or coordinator having responsibilities for health, and /or physical education and/or athletic programs.

$10 Monthly*
  • Those engaged in the teaching of health education, physical education, recreation, dance programs, and individuals who support these programs.

Retiree
Member

$40 Annually*
  • Any person who met the criteria for professional membership and is now retired as defined by NYS Retirement System.
